What is Study Leave?

Study leave is the permission grated to a Public Service officer to be absent legitimately from his or her duties for a period of time in order to pursue an approved course of study.

Study leave may be granted to an officer who:

  • is nominated by the Government to attend a course of study; or
  • attends a course of study at his or her own request, with the approval of the Government; or
  • is personally granted a bursary or other award to follow a course of study approved by Government.

There are two types of Study Leave:

Study Leave with Pay:

  • A study allowance or maintenance allowance equivalent to the officer's substantive salary, or a percentage of the substantive salary, is granted to the officer during the academic period of his or her study. This award is granted by:
  1. the Permanent Secretary, Public Service, for studies of up to three weeks duration;
  2. the Public Service Training and Development Advisory Committee for studies over three weeks.
  • In the case of the Police, nominations for courses of up to two months may be dealt with by the Commissioner of Police.

Study Leave without Pay:

  • No study allowance is granted to the officer. This award is granted by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service.
